In the city of Dhaka, Azharul Islam Khan is developing a growing community of plant enthusiasts, one video at a time.
With a degree in botany and a 27-year-long career in the pharmaceutical (制药的)industry, 54-year-old Azharul has always had an enthusiasm for plants. More crucially, he believes that anyone can learn to identify plants, regardless of academic background. This belief drove him to share his plant knowledge through shor engaging videos on Facebook and YouTube. Some videos were so popular that ther received over 10 million views within 24 hours, proving his approach resonates (引起共鸣)in today's fast-paced world.“People won't watch 40-minute lectures,” he explains, “but they’ll learn from short videos.’
Azharul's videos cover a wide range of topics, from medicinal plants like kukurchita to non-native species such as the Singapore daisy and the “'majestic heaven lotus”. His videos are also known for their creative video titles, which excite curiosity and attract viewers: “The plant whose thorns were used to make stamps,” and “Codura leaf used to clean fish.”
Since launching his Facebook channel a year ago, Azharul has attracted around a million followers, including plant enthusiasts and students. Central to his teachings is highlighting ecosystem balance he encourages children to plant trees during rainy seasons and learn how plants contribute to the environmental balance. Noy nicknamed brikkho bondhu (“plant friend” in Bangla), Azharul states: “If my work encourages someone to take an interest in planting trees or reveals new facts about them, then I've accomplished my mission."
Azharul says his journey is just beginning. He left his job and devoted all his time to spreading word online.“Plant identification isn't my profession - it's my passion(热情),"he declares. His love for plants and his desire to share his knowledge with the world will continue to grow, inspiring others to appreciate the beauty and importance of the natural world.
