Do you want to learn English better?Use your dictionaries. Our dictionary doesn’t include every word in the language. It does include, however, most, if not all, of the words that we might often use. Dictionary is the book that will help us the most in studying words. Now there are online dictionaries. We should form the habit of using them often. Now new words are being created every day. Different dictionaries are organized in different ways. At the front of a good dictionary, however, there is an explanation of how everything is organized. In the dictionary, words are organized in letter order. To help us find words quickly, there are guide words at the top of each dictionary page. The guide word on the left side is the first entry on that page, and the guide word on the right is the last entry on that page.
In a dictionary entry, the first group of letters tells us how to spell the word. This is followed by another group of letters to help us pronounce the word correctly. So to pronounce a group of letters correctly, we should first study the Pronunciation Key.
Once we know how to pronounce the every sound of the language, we need to know the number of syllables in a given word. Asyllable is a single sound with one or several letters such as “come”and “luck”. Aword has many syllables as there are vowel （元音） sounds in the word. And a centered dot is usually found between syllables,such as “welcome”and “unlucky”. In pronouncing any word of more than one syllable, we need to know which syllable receives more stress than another. This stress on one syllable of a word is called an accent.
